How to get a driving licence in Sweden – step by step

Learner permit
Take an eye test and apply for a learner permit (körkortstillstånd) from Transportstyrelsen. Applying is free and there is no minimum age to apply, but you need the permit before practising (from age 16).

Practise driving
Drive with a driving school or privately with a supervisor approved by Transportstyrelsen. Since 1 August 2026 no introduction course is required for private practice.

Study the theory
Learn traffic rules, road signs, vehicle knowledge and risk awareness. Practise with exam-style questions until you score 85% or more consistently.

Risk courses
Complete Risk 1 (alcohol, drugs, fatigue) and Risk 2 (skid track). Both must be completed and valid before the theory test and the driving test.

Theory test
Book the theory test at trafikverket.se. You have 50 minutes and need at least 52 correct answers out of 65 scored questions.

Driving test
After passing the theory you take the driving test with an examiner. Pass both and your licence is sent to your home.
Can I take the theory test in English?
Yes. The test is available in several languages that you choose when booking, and you can also listen to the questions in Swedish during the test.
Exchanging a foreign licence
Licences from EU/EEA countries are generally valid in Sweden. Many other licences must be exchanged or you need to pass the Swedish tests – check the rules for your country with Transportstyrelsen.
