👁️ Blind Spot - What You Can't See Can Hurt You

The blind spot is the area around the car that you cannot see in the mirrors. Checking it is vital.

Where is the blind spot?

  • On the sides of the car, just behind the driver's seat
  • Behind the car (especially in larger vehicles)
  • In front of long vehicles (buses, trucks)

When must you check the blind spot?

  • When changing lanes
  • When changing lanes
  • When turning
  • When overtaking
  • When reversing
  • When opening the car door

How do you check the blind spot?

  1. Check the rearview mirror first
  2. Check the side mirror
  3. Turn your head and look over your shoulder (shoulder check)
  4. Make your maneuver if it's clear

Modern aids:

  • Blind spot warning (BLIS) - lights in mirrors
  • Reversing camera
  • Parking sensors
  • 360-degree camera

NOTE! Technology does NOT replace the shoulder check!

Special risks:

  • Cyclists and mopeds can be hard to spot
  • Motorcycles often come faster than you think
  • Pedestrians when reversing
  • Children are hard to see due to their short height

Tips:

  • Adjust mirrors correctly before driving
  • Make it a habit to always look over your shoulder
  • Be extra careful in poor visibility
