Overtaking is one of the most dangerous maneuvers in traffic. Wrong decisions can have fatal consequences.

Basic rules for overtaking:

  • Overtake on the left side (exception: right lane on motorway)
  • Make sure it's allowed (no solid lines)
  • Ensure you have clear visibility far enough ahead
  • Check that no one behind you has already started overtaking

Before overtaking - check:

  1. Rearview mirror - is it clear behind?
  2. Left side mirror
  3. Blind spot (shoulder check)
  4. Road ahead - sufficient visibility?
  5. Oncoming traffic - do I have time?

During overtaking:

  • Change lanes decisively but smoothly
  • Accelerate to minimize time in oncoming lane
  • Keep safe distance from vehicle you're passing
  • Indicator BEFORE lane change, NOT during

After overtaking:

  • Return to right lane when you see entire vehicle in mirror
  • Indicate right before moving back
  • Don't slow down too quickly in front of overtaken vehicle

Overtaking prohibited:

  • At pedestrian crossings
  • Just before and in intersections
  • At railway crossings
  • When visibility is blocked (curves, hilltops)
  • At solid line on your side

Rule of thumb for safe overtaking: Required distance = 3 × your speed (at 90 km/h you need about 270 m clear road)
